10 Black Actresses That Should Have Been In Django Unchained

Recently I watched the blockbuster hit Django Unchained, and I definitely recommend you do the same. The movie has taken some criticism already, but personally I think it was a well-crafted piece of cinema, peppered with Quentin Tarantino’s particularly entertaining brand of eloquent exposition and vivid violence (it’s a 12/10). There were many standout performances that deserve mention, including that of Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L Jackson, and an exceptionally awesome performance by Christolph Waltz, but there was of course one performance I wasn’t particularly impressed by, and it was that of actress Kerry Washington. I’m not saying that Kerry Washington did an necessarily bad job playing Jamie’s wife Broomhilda (Brunhilda) in my new favourite movie, but considering that (spoiler alert) her role in the movie was primarily non-speaking, and she mostly served as a flashback/hallucinated reminder to our hero Django of the importance of his mission, they could have given him a more compelling visage.

20 Human Hands Transformed Into Animal Faces

The magic of Guido Daniele's 'Handimals' series is obvious at first glance. Daniele's specialty is painting hands, and his first Handimals collection came out in 2000. Born in 1950, he started body painting as late as 1990, but quickly discovered his niche. His preferred models are his two children, 17 and 24, as they are familiar to him. As Daniele says: "If you're spending hours on end holding someone's hand, I'd rather it be the hand of someone I love. There's nothing worse than working with a nervous, unfamiliar model whose hands are shaking." Let's take a look at some of these amazing pieces of body art.

10 People Who Escaped Close Shaves With Death

Every day we walk the streets, most of the time little realizing how closely we might be dicing with death. The Grim Reaper is nothing if not unpredictable. Cars speed past in a seemingly parallel world, but the sidewalk would provide no protection if one were to come careering out of control, its path destined to cross your own. When flesh and bone is all that stands in the way of a ton of spinning metal, there can be only one winner.

8 Awesome Ways People are Messing with Telemarketers

As a society, we've drifted towards cell phones, so the telemarketer, that relentless annoyance, is becoming blissfully rarer as time goes on. However, there are still plenty of land-lines out there, and telemarketers are gleefully dialing away, annoying the hell out of anybody they can find. But sometimes people annoy back.

Five Federal Policies on Guns You’ve Never Heard Of

U.S. gun policy is set by both state and federal law. We previously published an explainer on the ways states have eased gun restrictions. But federal policy, too, has become more gun friendly in recent years — and we're not just talking about the 2008 Supreme Court ruling that struck down the handgun ban in Washington, D.C., and held that people have a right to keep guns in their homes.

6 Tips to Save on Home Heating

The approach of winter brings a chill to homeowners and home insurance companies alike. Homeowners feel the pinch in their pocketbooks from rising energy bills. Heating and cooling account for 56 percent of the energy use in a typical American home, according to the Department of Energy. Home insurance companies take a similar hit from the estimated 54,500 home fires each year in the United States, one-third of which occur during January and February, causing an average of 190 deaths, 625 injuries and $286 million in property loss, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Despite the certainty of winter, many of us fail to take steps to save on winter heating bills and minimize heating-related home insurance risk.

Top Ten Horror Flicks of All Time

I wish there was a way for the sound of a thunderclap and a distant scream to come through the fog as we introduce this week’s Top Ten list, a look at the greatest things that have ever cinematically gone bump in the night. As many DVDFile readers know, the horror genre is close to our silver-bullet-fearing hearts - our founder, Peter Bracke, even left DVDFile to write the definitive book on the Friday the 13th phenomenon, Crystal Lake Memories - and as All Hallows Eve looms on the dark horizon, we felt it more than appropriate to talk about all things spooky in our column this week.
