While America does love its movies about sexy bank robbers knocking off banks and street-racers smashing up cop cars, there’s still always an audience for a good patriotic movie. Top 10 Destinations to Commemorate Memorial Day
Memorial Day is considered by many to be the unofficial kick-off to summer as the weather is just right for a perfect 3-day weekend. However, the true meaning of the holiday is often lost in our eagerness to plan a getaway. There are lots of ways to honor them every year on the last day of May, publicly or in private. Here are five of them.
5 Ridiculous/Offensive Memorial Day Commercials
Some businesses are jerks for pimping a junk heap on wheels on Memorial Day. Others are silly for trying to sell sexual innuendo-heavy mattresses ("firm," "spread out," "not squishy") on a day that's supposed to be all about giving it up to American servicemen and women. Then there are these super-jerk stinkbombs that a handful of companies have lobbed at the TV-viewing crowd on Memorial Day.
Top 10 Memorial Day Getaways
Even though summer doesn't officially start until a month or so after the Memorial Day weekend, most of us treat this three-day holiday as if it does mark the onset of the season. Our top 10 Memorial Day getaways won't require extensive travel - or, an extensive budget, for that matter - but will definitely help you have a most memorable weekend.
Top 10 Memorial Day Songs
Memorial Day, first known as Decoration Day, originated in the North after the Civil War to commemorate fallen Union soldiers. By the twentieth century the holiday had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. I’ve always thought that the best way to honor the fallen is to make every effort to prevent needless deaths in the future.. That means avoiding unnecessary wars and engaging in combat only as a true last resort. In this vein, here are my Top Ten Memorial Day Songs. The list is highly debatable; songs about war and attendant suffering cut across all musical genres. Though I proudly claim some hippie roots I’ve omitted classics like “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?,“ “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Imagine” and “Give Peace A Chance.” I’ve also given short shrift to an important sub-genre of heavy metal antiwar anthems like Metallica’s 1989 classic, “One,” and ignored the rich history of punk rock odes to war.
